2016 Downtown Invitational
New York, New York • January 2016

UWMT packed it's bags for New York City to compete against the best-of-the-best at the Downtown invitational. The nation's premier tournament includes programs that consistently compete at Nationals and take home hardware.
This year, the tournament had a surprise guest: Snowstorm Jonas, who brought along a blanket of snow that forced a travel ban in the city. Good thing the subway network was robust enough to move the competitors and judges to and from the courthouse!
Unfortunately, because of the snow, two of the UW's seven team members' flights were grounded, so the entire team was not able to compete. Fortunately, NYU lent a hand and offered up one of their students to compete along side the Huskies for the weekend.
Despite the circumstances, the Huskies had a good showing. They split the opening round against Texas, who finished in third at their division last year's Nationals. In rounds two and three, UW lost close matches with Cal and Michigan, gaining valuable experience along the way. In the final round, the mockers won two out of three ballots against Columbia University.
Freshman Natalie Garson, filling in for a new witness role because of the grounded flights, earned an outstanding witness award for her portrayal of Corey Hyde. This is her second award this season, with hopefully more on the way.
Up next for the Huskies: the Boise Regional tournament in early February. There, the mockers will compete along side Team 1195 to secure bids to the Opening Round Championships.
