2017 Bulldog Brawl
Spokane, Washington • October 2017
To get the year started, UWMT made the trip east to Spokane to attend the first Bulldog Brawl tournament, hosted by Gonzaga University. The Huskies brought all of their returning and new talent, and ended up showing well, especially considering this was the earliest in the year the program had ever competed.
The UW Gold squad opened the season with a solid win over Portland A, and kept their good start going by taking both ballots from Air Force A. On Sunday, the team split with Air Force B before running into some bad luck in their final round against Reed College. Only one judge scored the fourth round, and their ballot favored Reed, but ended up carrying twice the weight to balance the rest of the tournament.
UW Purple also opened the year with a commanding win, over the same Reed mentioned above. They closed out Saturday with a tight loss to Air Force B, but rebounded nicely with a 3-1 Sunday across rounds with Portland A and the bye-buster team (which takes alternate competitors from around the tournament to create an even number of teams in the field).
Overall, this tournament was a success. Both teams went 5-3 and earned an honorable mention and the closing ceremonies. For most of the new members, mock trial is a brand new experience, and this was only their third weekend since joining the team. Not bad for a quick turnaround!
