2018 CUBAIT
New York, New York • October 2018
The UWMT 2018-19 campaign began with a trip to NYC with all the returning competitors. The veteran squad attended CUBAIT, the Columbia University Big Apple Invitational Tournament, which is one of the top events in the country. It was a great experience to start the year, as the mockers faced a set of opponents they could easily see at a National Championship Tournament.
UW came out of the gate strong, taking two ballots off of St. Thomas University, from Texas. Then, UW faced American University and came one point away from winning the round. It was a hard-fought battle, and UW was proud to earn the split decision. Saturday's 3-1 record set up a showdown with Miami University, perennial powerhouse and reigning AMTA National Champions. UW could not be deterred and, again, came within one point of a full victory! Of course, splitting a round with the reigning champions is always a strong result. The final round was against tournament host Columbia, and again the Huskies battled hard, this time coming up short and dropping both ballots.
In those final three rounds--against American, Miami, and Columbia--UW went against schools that had all earned at least one Top 3 showing in their Nationals divisions in the past three seasons, with Miami having earned the distinction in each of the past three seasons. Despite ending with a 4-4 record for the weekend, every student felt that this was a terrific showing to start the year.
Up next, this veteran team will dissolve and these members will join all of the new recruits that UWMT took in the tryout process. For the first time ever, the Huskies will be fielding three teams this season. Everyone will be attending tournaments at Oregon in November and the Emerald City Open in early December. Stay tuned to see how the season turns out!
