2015 Emerald City Open
Seattle, Washington • December 2015
UW hosted it's annual invitational for the sixth consecutive season over the weekend of December 5-6, 2015. Like before, the event brought schools from around the country to the Emerald City to compete for bragging rights. But this year's tournament was, for the first time ever, held at the Seattle Municipal Courthouse, a beautiful venue just east of historic Pioneer Square.
The UW Gold Team (1195) finished as the top team after four hard-fought rounds. After defeating Gonzaga to start things off, UW split a round with Loras College (traveling all the way from Iowa). The lost ballot to Loras was the only one 1195 would drop all weekend as they won-tied against Arizona won-won against Oregon on Sunday. The victory is the first of the season for the Huskies, who are looking to keep last year's momentum rolling after finishing in 2nd Place at the National Championship Tournament and earning a Top 10 Power Ranking over the summer. Senior Taylor Deardorff added another attorney award to her trophy collection as the defense closer, while freshman Kate Moyer took home her first accolade for her performance as defense expert, J.D. Lorean.
Team 1196, the Purple Team, finished strong as well. After an opening-round loss to Arizona--who finished Top 10 at Nationals last season--Purple rebounded quickly with nice victories over Reed and Chemeketa. In the last round, the Dawgs split with our friends at the University of Portland to finish with a record of 5-3, tied for 6th. Team captain, Kaitlyn McGlothlen, won her first individual award for her role as the defendant.
Hosting an invitational is a difficult task that requires everything from finding a location for the tournament months in advance to running the tab room during the rounds. The Huskies would like to thank Lucas Heflin, the UW Tournament Coordinator, for putting in so much time and effort to make sure this year’s tournament was successful. The UW Program would also like to give a huge thanks to UW alumni Alex Crown, Brent Powell, Kaleigh Powell, and Jonathan Wu for volunteering their time to make sure everything ran smoothly. Finally, we would like to thank all of our volunteer judges as well as the entire Seattle Municipal Courthouse staff for allowing us to host our tournament at their lovely venue.
From here, the Huskies will rearrange teams before the January invitational tournaments. Team 1196 will head to Los Angeles over MLK weekend to compete at UCLA's illustrious Sunset Strip Invitational. One week later, Team 1195 will head to New York City to fight it out among the nation's best at the Downtown Invitational.
