2016 Geneva Opening Round Championships
Geneva, Illinois • March 2016
The second leg on the trip to the National Championship Tournament is the Opening Round Championships, which take place throughout the country during March. Because UWMT advanced both teams out of the Boise Regional, the entire program made this year’s trip. Just like the past three years, the tournament ended sweetly with UW earning one of the coveted bids to the National Championship Tournament!
Team 1195, fresh off of a perfect 8-0 regionals performance, had an award-winning weekend. After splitting the opening round with Illinois State University A, the mockers squared off against Lewis University and won the round. Close splits with Dayton (who earned an honorable mention finish) and University of Kentucky left the Dawgs with a total of 5 ballots. Those ballots tied the Huskies with three other programs, but the difference was that UW faced the hardest opposing schedule of the batch, and therefore won the tiebreaker!
Team 1196, comprised of mostly first-year members, had a series of strong performances. After a tough opening round against Wheaton A (who honorable mentioned), the Dawgs split their three remaining rounds against University of Illinois at Chicago, Lewis, and Wheaton B (who earned an NCT bid with 6 wins). The Team will graduate senior Vanessa James, but the remaining competitors are eager to avenge this performance at next year’s ORCS.
Senior Taylor Deardorff earned UW’s lone individual award this tournament: a perfect prosecutor performance plus a 17-rank defense attorney role. Ms. Deardorff holds the distinction of being the first (and only) UW competitor to earn double attorney honors at ORCS.
From here, Team 1195 will begin preparing for the National Championship Tournament. Last year, the Huskies earned 2nd Place in their division and they look to replicate that success again. Like last season, the NCT will again feature a new case problem for the competitors to work with. The case will be released at the conclusion of next weekend’s tournaments, and the NCT will follow in mid-April. Stay tuned for updates!
