2016 Boise Regional
Boise, Idaho • February 2016
Each year, the preliminary mock trial events all lead to one big weekend: Regionals. This year, UWMT dominated the Boise Regional.
Both UW teams competed against the other Pacific Northwest programs in an attempt to secure some of the seven available bids to the upcoming Geneva, Illinois Opening Round Championship (ORC). Last season, UW A won the Regional with a perfect finish, but UW B just missed the cut. This year, both teams earned their spot after a great weekend of competition.
Team 1195 ran the slate against Oregon State University, Gonzaga University (two times!), and University of Idaho. UW was the only team to take any ballots off of Gonzaga A or Idaho, who both finished with 6 wins and also advanced to Geneva. Senior Taylor Deardorff followed up on last-year's all-region attorney effort with another individual award. Too, freshman Peter Welch earned all-region witness honors for his expert witness portrayal. It's his first career individual award!
Team 1196 had a terrific weekend too! After win-tie decisions against Cal D and Portland A, the mockers split a tight battle with Oregon B and posted a solid victory against Reed in the final round. All-in-all, the Huskies earned 6 total ballots (ties count as half ballots) which was good enough for Fifth Place and more importantly, a bid to Geneva! Junior and Captain Kaitlyn McGlothlen took home another individual award, making that three in a row for her this season. And freshman Austin Graham made some UW history by becoming the first UW competitor to take home all-region witness awards on both sides of the case!
Overall, the weekend couldn't have turned out any better. Not only was UW the only program to earn two of the coveted bids, but the mockers also racked up more individual awards than any other program. It was a great showing that will give the Huskies great confidence as they begin their preparations for Geneva!
