2017 Fresno Opening Round Championships
Fresno, California • March 2017
After earning two bids at the first ever Seattle Regional tournament in February, the Dawgs travelled south to spend spring break in Fresno, California to compete at the Opening Round Championships.
Twenty-two teams that qualified out of Regionals in February joined the two UW squads, all fighting to earn one of the six coveted bids to the National Championship Tournament in April. Unfortunately, this year the mockers came up just short of their goal.
Team 1367 opened the weekend with a split against University of Oregon A, who finished in the Top 10 at least year's NCT. Then, they came up short against perennial powerhouse Cal-Berkeley and Pepperdine. But, the Huskies finished off the weekend on a high note by taking both ballots from UNLV.
Team 1366 also started the tournament with a split decision against UCSB. The squad finished off Saturday at 3-1 after taking two ballots off of Scripps College. Unfortunately, Sunday just wasn't the Dawgs' day, as they lost three heartbreaking ballots by a total of 4 points in Rounds 3 and 4.
All in all, UWMT walked away from the weekend without a trophy, but they are as excited as ever for the upcoming season!
