2017 Seattle Regional
Seattle, Washington • February 2017

UW was on double duty at Regionals this year, not only were both teams competing--like always--for bids to the Fresno Opening Round Championships, but the program also had the privilege of hosting the event in conjunction with the American Mock Trial Association for the first time ever!
The weekend was a great success on both fronts. The tournament ran smoothly and on-time, judges were plentiful, and both teams performed well enough to advance to Fresno!
On the hosting side, UWMT would really like to thank everyone who assisted in this event coming together: the Law School and Denny Hall for allowing us access to their great facilities, Dean Matthew Le for providing welcoming remarks to start the weekend, each of our volunteer judges for graciously devoting their morning of afternoon or even entire weekend, all of the UWMT coaches for setting up and running everything, and UWMT junior Alexandra Bartos-O'Neill for recruiting our largest judging pool in history!
On the competitive side, Teams 1366 and 1367 both earned their stripes. The former finished with the top record at the tournament, winning rounds against two advancing teams--Oregon B and Cal B--before taking down then-unbeaten Chemeketa and Oregon State B on Sunday. This marks the third consecutive first-place Regionals finish for UWMT's A team and gives the group a great confidence heading into next month's tournament. Meanwhile, Team 1367 overcame a tough first-round loss to Chemeketa before going 5-1 over the next three rounds. Heading into the final round, the team needed to win both ballots against local rival Gonzaga's A squad in order to advance, and the Huskies came up big! UW took the round and earned one of the final bids to Fresno.
Two mockers earned their first career individual awards: first-year competitor Angelia Miranda earned a perfect 20 ranks as 1367's plaintiff closer, while Caroline Nelson won a long-overdue witness award for her portrayal of Dr. Owens. Additionally, sophomore Natalie Garson added an additional award to her collection, her first at regionals.
Each year, UWMT sets a series of goals. The first this season was to advance the full program out of Regionals and to the Fresno ORC. We're proud to say that that goal has been met! Now it's on to dealing with AMTA's annual case changes and the slate of California schools that await in late March.
