2018 Emerald City Open
Seattle, Washington • December 2018

The Emerald City Open is back! UWMT used to host this invitational annually between 2010 and 2015. After that, the team began hosting the Seattle Regional and stopped this tournament to ensure that the Regional ran smoothly. Now, after two successful Regional tournaments, we were proud to re-establish ECO this event to give some west-coast programs some practice before the competitive season begins. We're proud to report that this year's ECO was a great success! For the first time in program history, we provided three scoring judges per trial! Special thanks to student tournament coordinator Sheila Panyam for all of her hard work to recruit those judges and out on the event. And, thank you to the folks at the UW School of Law for allowing us access to their trial rooms for the weekend!
For the Huskies, it was a blast to face off against so many local programs. Between the three UW teams and the three teams from University of Oregon in attendance, there were seven UW-UO match-ups during the weekend. In those rounds, the ballots came out even between the schools with each program taking nine wins a piece and tying three ballots. In addition to the Oregon rounds, the UW Grey Team (1342) took on our friends at Reed College in the final round and won all three ballots! Meanwhile the Purple Team (1341) took all three ballots off of Oregon State University to finish in an honorable-mention fourth place for the weekend. The final UW squad, the Gold Team (1343), had their non-UO rounds in the first portion of the weekend with a clean sweep of the bye-buster team (a made on-the-fly group of non-competing members from other schools that is necessary to field an even number of teams for each round) and then two split-decisions against the two teams from Oregon State. For UWMT, the highlight was the final round of the weekend wherein all three teams won every possible ballot, advancing Grey team to a 0.500 record, Purple team to their honorable mention finish, and Gold Team to a 9-3 record, good for the Third Place trophy!
In addition to the team trophy, seven individual UW students took home awards for their performances. First-year members Alaka Rao and Kyler Teo followed up on their award-winning performances at Oregon's invitational in November with repeat award performances at ECO, with Alaka earning this award as an attorney (unlike her previous witness award). Eleanor Roads, also a new member of UWMT, took home her first individual honors as a witness! Four returning members--Savannah Bair, Nina Downey, Chelsa Edano, and Samira Khadar--earned enough ranks in their attorney roles to net individual awards. And, Ms. Khadar tacked on an outstanding witness performance, too! Samira joins only a handful of UWMT mockers to double-award during a single tournament, and an even smaller group to have done it as a witness on one side of the case and an attorney on the other. Congratulations to all of the recognized competitors!
The competitors are now on a very well-earned Winter Break break from UWMT practices and scrimmages. Every year, this point in the calendar marks the time when UW's color squads are dissolved and students are shuffled into new teams to work with through the upcoming competitive season. Two of the new teams will be headed to UCLA's invitational tournament during the MLK weekend in January, and the third team will head to UC Berkeley's event the following weekend. It's been a terrific start to the year and everyone is looking forward to seeing what kind of noise these Huskies can make later in the school year!
