2019 UCLASSIC + AtypiCal

Los Angeles, California + Berkeley, California • January 2019

The Huskies started their 2019 campaigns by attending two different tournaments in California in January. Team 1341 and Team 1342 attended UCLA's high-ranking tournament over MLK Weekend, while Team 1343 competed at UC Berkeley's AtypiCal's event.

UW had a strong showing at UCLA! Team 1341 took home a 2nd Place trophy (out of 38 teams!) with the program's best record ever at the event. After tying two ballots with Stanford A, the Huskies ran the table by beating Arizona State, Cal, and Columbia. Meanwhile, Team 1342 fought hard and just missed earning a Top 10 finish. They were in every round, and ended up with a 0.500 record during the weekend, with split rounds against Fresno State, Arizona State, and UCLA. They had a strong win in Round 3 against USC A!

Team 1343 had some tough luck in Berkeley the following weekend. In Rounds 2, 3, and 4, the Huskies had close contests with their opponents, but only had one judge in the trial and each time they lost that one judge's ballot by a narrow margin. Despite the record they finished with, the mockers were proud of their performances and identified areas where they can improve for Regionals. Plus, they came away thinking that they probably would have taken a ballot or two if they had multiple ballots available in each trial. Shoutout to first-year member Riley Grace for her portrayal of the defendant, which earned her perfect witness ranks for the weekend! This is Riley Grace's first individual award.

Up next, the competitive AMTA season begins! The students will compete along with other local programs at the Seattle Regional tournament that UWMT is hosting in conjunction with AMTA. This is what the mockers have been building toward all season long!
